"Since
its incorporation to Chicago in the early 1970’s, Universidad
Popular (UP) has become known as a place where community residents come
to learn
with, by and from one
another."
Welcome
to our new development, this website was created to represent our
organization to the on-line population. As our organization continues
to grow we wish to provide you with information of our mission along
with our programs and current events. We currently offer our services
to over 600 adults and children in the Pilsen, Little Village, and
Chicago Lawn areas of Chicago.
The
world in which most Latinos live in Chicago has been dramatically
reduced due to linguistic, economic and legal limitations. In UP's
view, this is a rather disempowering construct; to counterbalance such
a disempowering force, it began exploring ways to expand the boundaries
of people's worlds in our neighborhoods and out of it came the Digital
Literacy Program (DILIPRO) whose mission is to enable people to travel
far beyond the above-said boundaries. This way, people will be a time
citizen of the global society.
