Universidad Popular (UP) was founded in the 1970s as a volunteer effort. Though deep commitment and energy, Universidad Popular has grown to become a hub for Chicago’s Little Village and Chicago Lawn neighborhoods and the broader Latino community.

We are a popular education center that places a participatory approach and a liberatory teaching-learning process front and center in everything we do. From our spaces to our programs there is not a single part of UP that has not been shaped by a dedicated volunteer. Volunteers have approached us from all walks of life. From our neighbors, to students, to individuals and groups who are committed to social justice and the process of creating real change, everyone is and can be a part of Universidad Popular.

Universidad Popular opens its doors to all who want to make a real difference. Come visit the community center and sit down to talk with us for a little while. Everybody has something to contribute, therefore, everybody can make a real difference!
