Thank you to everyone who came to the Sixth Annual Feria del Mole at the Arturo Velasquez West Side Technical Institute! More than 1,500 people came to taste home-made moles from neighborhood residents. It was so successful that the mole ran out after only a few hours. Eloisa Siguenza, with her Oaxacan mole, was the winner for the second year in a row. Check out coverage of La Feria del Mole in the Chicago Tribune [Link]

Proud to announce that we were honored with an Empowerment Grant from the Motorola Mobility Foundation! The grant will support advanced computer literacy and the computer repair program – UP Squad – at Universidad Popular.[Link]

Universidad Popular was featured in the Chicago Architecture Foundation's July newsletter! The Foundation writes, "Universidad Popular, or the "People's University," has been an important part of the Little Village community since it opened its doors on Hamlin St. in 2005, and more broadly to the city of Chicago for decades longer…" Check out the full article here.
Universidad Popular will be featured on the Chicago Architecture Foundation's openhousechicago tour of Little Village on October 15-16. The Chicago Architecture Foundation's newest initiative is a free festival weekend of "behind-the-scenes" public access to 150 of Chicago's most interesting places & spaces, in a dozen different communities, representing a rich cross section of styles and uses. 15th Ward Alderman Toni Foulkes Celebrates Family Literacy at UP (June 23, 2011)
The 15th Ward Alderman Toni Foulkes visited UP's annual "Sharing Our Laurels" for the Families Learning to Teach program, and celebrated the families and their achievements. She pledged her continued support for UP in Chicago Lawn. Eberhart Elementary School Principal Nneka Gunn also spoke at the ceremony.
Rodrigo Rojas performs at Universidad Popular (June 23, 2011)
Rodrigo Rojas gave a free concert on Thursday, June 23rd to Little Village residents at Universidad Popular. This concert was part of UP's summer concert series, launched in May with a free performance by Mexican pop singer Miguel Inzunza. Rodrigo Rojas is a Bolivian-born singer-songwriter currently residing in Mexico City.
Executive Director of Little Village Chamber of Commerce Celebrates LETOS (June 16, 2011)
Nilda Esparza, the Executive Director of the Little Village Chamber of Commerce, was the guest speaker at Universidad Popular's annual "Sharing Our Laurels" celebration for the Learning to Succeed (LETOS) program. "Sharing Our Laurels" celebrates one year of English language and literacy achievements at UP. "It's an honor that you're sharing your laurels with me," Esparza told over 100 participants. "I am proud to say that I work in a community with a place like UP."
Ribbon-cutting ceremony for Overcoming Barriers to Success (May 26, 2011)
Blanca Castrejon, from the Department of Rehabilitative Services, joined Universidad Popular for a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new programs, Overcoming Barriers to Success (OBS): Citizenship and Computer Literacy for the Differently-abled. The program equips disabled participants with the skills and self-confidence to both succeed in the workplace and to enrich their community.
We are inviting you to our ribbon cutting ceremony for our new Spring and Summer program Overcoming Barriers to Success (OBS): ESL, Citizenship and Computer Literacy for the Differently-abled. This will mark the beginning of a program catered to Spanish-speaking adults and seniors with disabilities and/or special needs, along with those lacking funds for the citizenship fee due to unemployment.
