STRETCHING YOUR DOLLARS 

     Universidad Popular has been implementing a project known as Stretching Your Dollars (SYD).  This 20-hour intensive course is designed to prepare neighborhood residents to get the maximum purchasing power out of our limited earnings, savings and inheritances.  Participants in Chicago Lawn, Little Village, and Pilsen have been in workshops on budgeting and making savvier spending decisions, credit management, establishing and maintaining bank accounts, income taxes and preparing one to buy a house.  Different organizations and financial institutions within these communities contributed to the success of this financial literacy initiative.  SYD participants gained a greater understanding on the concept of money management and on how to take advantage of financial services in their respective communities.  A Little Village resident  mentioned that he had never before thought about saving money until he heard the phrase “pay yourself first” during one of the financial literacy presentations. This program derived from the following key topics:

  • Budgeting and making savvier spending decisions

  • Credit management

  • Establishing and maintaining bank accounts

  • Learning about income tax

  • Preparing ourselves to buy a house
