FINANCIAL
LITERACY
STRETCHING YOUR DOLLARS
Universidad Popular has been implementing a project known as
Stretching Your Dollars (SYD). This 20-hour intensive course is
designed to prepare neighborhood residents to get the maximum purchasing
power out of our limited earnings, savings and inheritances. Participants
in Chicago Lawn, Little Village, and Pilsen have
been in workshops on budgeting and making savvier spending decisions,
credit management, establishing and maintaining bank accounts, income
taxes and preparing one to buy a house. Different organizations and
financial institutions within these communities contributed to the success
of this financial literacy initiative. SYD participants gained a greater
understanding on the concept of money management and on how to take
advantage of financial services in their respective communities. A Little
Village resident mentioned that he had never before thought about saving
money until he heard the phrase “pay yourself first” during one of the
financial literacy presentations. This program derived from the following
key topics:
-
Budgeting and making savvier
spending decisions
-
Credit management
-
Establishing and maintaining bank
accounts
-
Learning about income tax
-
Preparing ourselves to buy a house
