LEARNING
TO
SUCCEED
GUIDING YOU WITH LANGUAGE,
JOBS, CULTURE, and PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Universidad Popular (UP)
offers a program for adult immigrants called LEarning TO Succeed (LETOS).
It is designed to ease the transition of immigrants into a new society.
LETOS focuses on English language skills but also covers financial
matters, tax returns, basic computer training, and practical information.
The backbone of the program relies on class time, although other
activities allow participants to soak up the community.
LETOS uses English language training as a hook to
expose recent as well as seasoned immigrants to museums, libraries,
aldermanic proceedings and neighborhood events. This makes a more seamless
transition for adults adjusting to this culture. Broken up into groups by
English language skills, the classes help acclimatize and empower
participants. By using LETOS, we believe that your success is more
certain.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Born in
the late 1960’s, Universidad Popular (UP) was formally incorporated as a
non-for-profit organization in 1972. It has always focused its attention
on the socioeconomic problems facing the Latino immigrant population here
in Chicago. Physically revamped in 2005, UP is poised to be more effective
than it has ever been.
The Little Village neighborhood, also known as South
Lawndale, is currently one of Chicago’s biggest ports for Latino
immigrants. The neighborhood also suffers from many of the problems
associated with immigrant neighborhoods. High crime and poverty rates
coupled with low literacy rates make the success of many immigrants
difficult. It was out of this situation that LETOS was born.
